want to discuss anything that is not well... for lack of a better word kiddy. Some decent mangas, manhwa oir whatever that is geared for adults. Or with content one would suspect to be adult oriented. Doesn't have to be porn, can be shit like Narutaru in nature... Just some mature and is a good read.

One of the worst is the one I said.. Narutaru or Shadow Star.. poor poor Norio.. he is mourned.

The most famoust japanese Mangaka for "Graphic Novel" maybe Osamu Tezuka (late works such as "Adolf") and Jiro Taniguchi (later Works, starting with "The Walking Man"), but in generell many of the Gekiga (such as Yoshihiro Tatsumi or Kazuo Koike) or Josei (such as Kiriko Nananan) Authors.

If you're looking for well-written suspense, Urasawa writes some amazing manga.

Monster, Master Keaton, and 20th Century Boys (though I admit I never liked the last one as much).

I believe Baccano! has a proper graphic novel now, but I hear that the anime and light novels are better. Still probably worth checking out.

Re-reading the OP, it occurs to me that you might have been looking for something more like "Battle Royale."

Very bloody and dark series.

Does it have to be japanese style? Because I'd highly recommend Artesia by Mark Smylie. It's like Berserk, but just a tad more realistic.

As a previous user suggested, Battle Angel Alita is a very good start.

Sundome is also pretty good, but it's extremely weird, so be warned.

Honeymoon Salad is a mature slice-of-life seinen series. Well, imo all Ninomiya Hikaru's works are interesting and most of them for mature audience.

You can try Ookami no Kuchi: Wolfsmund but only if you prepared to see the Middle Ages in it's true brutality. Not too gory but atmosphere is definitely here.

There are a number of various types of graphic novels and some are quite good. It is interesting how a story may appear as a novel or a game and then become an anime. It is quite common and some series that are incomplete in the anime form such as FMP do have full story in the original novel format.
