    Remembering the Kanji vol. I
A complete course on how not to forget the meaning and writing of Japanese characters
    James W. Heisig
    fourth edition

Instead of learning the Kanji by repeating (and directly with the pronunciation) Heisig recommends to learn first the meaning of the Kanji in your native language together with a little story to remember. To accomplish this he breaks the Kanji into their components.

This could actually also belong into the “Japan-Sprache (language)” section but I think this forum is probably more appropriate as Japanese is hard enough to learn without an additional foreign language sticking in between, so it will be more helpful for the english natives here.

    How to use:
With caution! I actually like the idea of learning the Kanji that way. It also helps to recognize the small details of them.
The downside of this book is, that there is nearly never only one meaning (and less translation) to one Kanji. Unfortunately they always only used one single word in this book and always a different one (maybe so their index work – I have no idea). Because of that the translation is nearly always incomplete and sometimes they even chose a questionable one.
While I still recommend that book I would use it with dictionary. Best one where you can build the Kanji with their components as Heising does in this book.

I stumbled across this book while searching for the german one. I have it as a physical book, but I was looking for a digital copy. If you happen to find one: let me know.

    That's it. Have fun!
